Hi, This will be a place where GIMP Newbies can come and learn some of the firsts they need to know about Gimp after they have the program installed.
Unfortunately I have only the Windows Operating System so if you have another Operating System  things may look different. Most tools still work the same though. (Depending on your version of gimp they may look a little different too). Gimp can be installed on many types of Operating Systems - Linux, Windows & Mac Apple
Best ways to learn are by experimenting with the program - you will find it is very powerful! Tutorials are another good way - you will find many on YouTube and also at the forums in the links provided.
I don't know all there is to know and if you have more questions, follow the links where you can find out more.

Have fun Gimping! Play, play, play and don't forget to experiment.
Best thing about GIMP is you can always 'undo' an action or more, in the present session
If you are satisfied that your project is finished you can (export) it as one of the many types of supported files or just incase you may want to keep it (save as) a xcf. GIMP'S native file format. If you do this it will open up next time with all your layers, paths, selections, etc. [How you left the image when you saved it.] Unfortunately not with history though so you cannot undo. This is especially important if you want to leave it for a time and come back to your project and finish it.
