Text can be edited before you merge it down to your background. When your text is in the text box (surrounded by four handles). And also if you click on the text editor in the tool options. you can then if you highlight part of your text change the different areas. Font, Size, Bold or Unbold, Italic, Underlined, Strike through, Kerning or Baseline. You can also change your text's alignment. I usually have mine centred but you have 4 options Just like in Word processors

Text can also be put over pictures
