Layers

Layers / Layer Groups

Gimp Supports Layers!
First layer is called the background. Can be an image  or a plain color. You can decorate it later if you like. Successive layers can be added for each different colour or style.
You can also add Layer groups.
Even adding text to an image is adding another layer.
To work with seperate layers you will need to remember to highlight the one you wish to work on.
Always keep your layer dialogue open so you can see which layer is highlighted. The one you are working on is the one that is to be highlighted. Otherwise you will find that nothing seems to happen and find out later that something did happen to another layer!

You will see some more icons above and below the layer dialogue

Above the are layer modes which we will show you on another page.
You can change the opacity of the layer and there are also 3 lock icons. Lock pixels, Lock position and size and lock alpha channel
Below are add a layer, add a layer group (folder), Move the selected layer up, move the selected layer down, Duplicate the selected layer, merge selected layer with first visible layer below it, add a mask to the selected layer and delete selected layer.

Right click menu on selected layer will show many of these features plus more.

A layer group is useful when you want to do the same thing to a lot of different layers. They can all be put into a layer group - You only have to do the operation/s once and the operation will affect all layers in the group.
Another useful use for groups is, when you have a lot of layers and want to change '1' layer it is a good idea to have your  layers in different categories/groups so you only need to look through that group for the layer you want.

Masks can be added to layers to remove/add a part of a picture to another. We will go into these more on another page.

When you are finished your project, you may want to keep the transparency. Merge visible layers (under image), and export as a png. If you will be uploading your graphic to a site that does not support png's yet make sure it has a background that will make it stand out. Otherwise the site will when converting your graphic to a jpg give it an ugly colour background.
